Modular Support
The Modular Support system Manufactured by STS Defence Ltd greatly increases the flexibility of ships to convert from one Aircraft type to another with minimal effort. The system was initially for the Merlin aircraft; the project was expanded to incorporate not only CVS platforms, but also all other ship types that were to become Merlin capable. The benefits of this method of storage and transport system were quickly recognised and the project expanded to incorporate most of the current Aircraft types in service with the Fleet Air Arm. At present all UK Navy aviation capable ships, except T42 destroyers and T22 frigates are included in the MS programme. It offers a secure accessible stowage for Aircraft Servicing and Support Equipment (ASSE). It is not used normally for the stowage of aircraft spares, with the exception of a limited capacity in support of the Commando Helicopter Force. Modules are free standing and stackable ashore, and are affixed to the Interface assemblies when embarked. They can be transported by road or air. Modules are available in three sizes and are designated Bulk (shown above), Medium and Small (shown right). Bulk 
modules have an aluminium square tube frame structure with infill panels of pressed aluminium sheet. Medium and Small modules are manufactured from pressed aluminium panels. All modules have up and over roller shutter doors. Modules are finished externally using a powder coating giving a durable, damage resistant finish.
