Mechanical Design Engineer

To be responsible for all aspects of mechanical design in line with the Business objectives.
  • Liaise with internal stakeholders to ensure requirements are fully understood and appropriately documented.
  • Carry out concept and detailed design.
  • Prepare 2D drawings and assembly drawings, 3D models and assemblies.
  • Carry out tolerance analysis.
  • Liaise with external partners to conduct finite element modelling and any other simulation work.
  • Provide support as required to junior designers and sub contract designers.
  • Produce 3D printed models as required.
  • Liaise with suppliers and customers as required.
  • Be responsible for conducting design reviews (Design for Manufacture/Assembly/Test).
  • Proactively support Design/Process failure mode and effects reviews.
  • Work closely with fabrication/machine shop facilities in construction of prototypes.
  • Assess prototypes and document/feedback findings to design and project teams.
  • Ensure lessons learned are captured and applied.
  • Play an active part in the construction and evolution of the STS Mechanical Design best practice manual.
  • Proactively alert design and project teams to risks and potential mitigation actions.
  • Ensure that all design work is cost optimised.
  • Ensure that all work is fully documented to enable smooth handover to other designers as required.
  • Identify/implement opportunities to improve design process robustness/efficiency.
  • Ensure that Company Design Work Instructions are followed and where appropriate suggest changes or improvements to processes with efficiency and diligence in mind.
  • Adhere to the Company’s quality operating procedures at all times.
  • Act at all times in accordance with the terms and conditions described in the Employee’s contract of employment.
  • Comply with STS Health and Safety and Environmental policy.
  • Carry out any other duties that might reasonably be requested.
  • 3+ years’ experience in a mechanical design role.
  • Engineering HNC/apprenticeship/HND/degree highly desirable – extensive experience may be considered in lieu of qualification.
  • Proven competence in 2D & 3D CAD (ideally AutoCAD Inventor), Microsoft Office Excel and Word essential.
  • Ideally experience in a fast paced engineering environment, preferably Defence or Aerospace related.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to work effectively in a team.
  • Professional and conscientious approach and manner.
