STS Defence Sponsors Daedalus D-Day 80
05th June 2024We are delighted to announce that we’re a sponsor for the Montserrat Events CIC Daedalus D-Day 80 event taking place at former WWII airfield HMS Daedalus this weekend!
Sponsoring Daedalus D-Day 80 is important to us as a Gosport business, as we have played (and we still do) a vital part in Gosport’s naval history.
Our site in Mumby Road sits on the original boatyard of Camper & Nicholsons, the luxury yacht builder, where during the First World War, the yard made patrol boats, minesweepers, and small naval craft for the Admiralty, reverting to high performance sailing yachts in the inter-war years.
With the start of the Second World War, yacht production was set aside in favour of torpedo and gunboats, minesweepers and landing craft. Famously, the yard produced “SLUG” boats for D-Day. These small craft, Surf Landing Under Girders, were designed to manage the kite anchors securing the Mulberry harbour roadways.
Today, STS Defence is an established technology and engineering company, specialising in supplying mission critical communications, electronics and intelligent systems and services to the Royal Navy and the defence sector, employing around 160+ people.
