Minister hears update on progress of new Research and Technology Centre at STS Defence

On Monday, the Minister of State for Defence Procurement, Stuart Andrew MP, visited Gosport-based STS Defence to view their capabilities in design, manufacture, equipment support, and technology research.

Jonathan Bowley, STS Defence’s Managing Director, briefed the Minister on the company’s capabilities and discussed the future of the Defence industry and the vital role played by small and medium enterprises. The focus of the brief was how STS Defence is continuously developing its people and investing for the future to meet the demands of customers across the defence sector.

“It was great to host the Minister for a visit to our site and to see progress on our new Research and Technology Centre. We were pleased to be able to share with him the breadth of our capability that is used on a wide range of current defence programmes. Even as only a medium sized business it is impressive to see the extent of our full expertise”, said Jonathan.

The Minister commented: “We’re investing over £1.5bn with small and medium-sized businesses like STS Defence, and they are crucial for growth and innovation across the country. Not only are they vital for the economy, employing millions of people, but they continue to help shape our world-leading defence industry.”

During nearly seventy years in the UK Defence industry, STS Defence has been able to lead the way in innovation and technology, adapting its offer and solutions to meet customer requirements. For example, recent research into Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning has led to the development of new concepts that include IConIC, a device that monitors engine health in real-time to predict system failures.

STS Defence believes that this success is a springboard to the next phase of growth and are therefore investing in the brand new Research & Technology Centre at its offices in Gosport. This will also see the recruitment of new high technology roles for the area. These investments help to strengthen STS Defence as an agile technology and engineering company that has the expertise and capability to deliver solutions that make a difference.
