Turning the Tide with the Orbital Marine O2 Tidal Turbine
29th July 2021Recently, the Orbital Marine O2 tidal turbine has begun to generate power after being connected to the grid at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) in Orkney.
STS Defence’s subsea section were fortunate enough to have contributed to the powerful device by supplying the ruggedised underwater connectors for the main power, low voltage and data cables via marine engineering company, ETA Connect. The connectors were specifically developed for the project in short timescales, at up to 180mm in diameter which are the largest ever produced by our Subsea brand.
Designed to withstand the harshest environments, these products are modular in construction and are easily adapted to suit other, similar applications in future.
We were excited to be involved on such an important project, not only for its scale but also because of the innovative design and the possibilities it presents for the future of energy production in the UK as the world’s most powerful tidal turbine.
A second unit is planned for manufacture and installation in 2022.
