STS Defence shares in BAE System’s success, accepting the Chairman’s Business Leader Award – ’50 Shades of Grey or a Black Box’
06th December 2019The BAE Systems Chairman’s Award celebrates the work that makes you proud and recognising the people who are key to the success of the business.
The Chairman’s award panel reviewed many nominations worldwide and judged ’50 Shades of Grey or a Black Box’ to be among the top ten winning entries in this category.
Our challenge was to design and manufacture a Line Replaceable Unit (LRU) which would reduce a half day console modification down to only 30 minutes. The LRU had to use existing fixings points and cable connections on platform whilst maintaining the same weight and centre of gravity.
“Historically, console modifications have been made up of bits of metal, nuts and bolts very similar to a Meccano set. Working with STS Defence we were able to rapidly prototype a solution which maintained the form fit and space envelope of the outgoing equipment. This has enabled the business to not only remove the obsolescence associated with the legacy system for the Royal Navy but also provide the next generation of computer processing with Shared Infrastructure that will allow the Royal Navy to host other third party applications.” ~ BAE Systems
Having attended the ceremony held last week at the Science Centre Glasgow, the Design & Manufacturing team were proud to receive the 2019 Chairman’s Award on behalf of STS Defence in recognition of our design and manufacturing services to BAE Systems.
To top the evening the opening speech mentioned STS Defence as providing an invaluable service in complimenting their own design teams. We were in fact the only SME among the winning nominations.
